GUIDELINES TO CHOOSING A NEW BRA

A well-fitting bra is without doubt the most important purchase when planning a new wardrobe.  A well designed, supportive bra will ensure a slimmer shape and improved posture – clothes will fit better, thus boosting self-confidence.  You feel good because you know you’re looking good!

Internationally it is accepted that about 80% of women wear the wrong sized bra – are you one of them?  When buying a bra, do you usually settle for the least uncomfortable of the styles you’ve tried?  Do you have a drawer full of bras you hardly ever wear because they’re so darned uncomfortable?  Perhaps these few tips will save you precious Rands - and a great deal of frustration - on your next bra-shopping expedition.

• The cups (letters - B, C, D etc) must contain the breasts – no bulging above or below the cup or at the armhole
• A gap under the cup indicates the cup is too big.
• The back strap should sit comfortably just below the shoulder blades.
• If the back size (figures – 32, 34, 36 etc) is too big, the back of the bra will ride up.
• Shoulder straps should not leave red marks or welts on the shoulders, or constantly slip down the arms.
• Ladies with sloping shoulders should avoid bras with wide-set straps
• Most support comes from wide back- and side-bands – breasts should not be suspended from the shoulders.
• Before buying, turn sideways onto a mirror and fold the leading arm across the body, making a right-angle at the elbow.  In a well-fitting bra, the nipple will be positioned halfway between shoulder and elbow – essential if your new clothes are to hang correctly on your body!
• The bra should be comfortable to wear and as it will be covered by clothing most of the time, how you feel in it is far more important than what it looks like.
• Avoid fully elasticated straps if at all possible.
• If you’re engaged in physical activity make sure you have a well-designed sports bra to reduce ‘the bounce factor’ to a minimum.
• Remember that, for every-day wear, your breasts need to be well supported.  Keep the skimpy, pretty little bras for a special outfit or celebration, but don’t wear them all the time.
